2. Shirdi awarded “Solar City” status by Centre:
* The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has awarded Sri Sai Baba Sansthan, Shirdi, in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra the status of "Solar City".
* In the next 5 years the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy would offer Rs 50 Crore to Shirdi City. The amount to develop Shirdi City futher into a solar city.
* The Sri Sai Baba Sansthan installed the world's biggest solar cooking system and 1.25 megawatt windmill power project in Bhorepathar village of the district on its own and this made the Government recognise their efforts for new
and renewable energy source.
* They save Rs 10,500 by using solar energy for cooking in the Sansthan. There is a under-construction project by Sansthan for the world's largest water heating system which when installed would provide 5 lakh litre of hot water per day to the pilgrims visiting the temple there.
3. U.S. military identifies ‘KILLER' soldier:
* The soldier who allegedly killed 16 Afghan civilians, mostly women and children, has been identified by US Military as Staff Sergeant Robert Bales (38). Sergeant Bales was flown out of Kuwait, even as Afghan President Hamid Karzai conveyed fury at his removal from Afghan soil.
* Although the Obama administration has signalled that this would not set back U.S. plans to draw down troops by 2014, there is a strong view that, combined with the Koran-burning incident in February 2012, U.S.-Afghan relations are deteriorating.
* In the meantime Sergeant Bales' attorney, John Henry Browne, dismissed allegations of alcohol and domestic issues, attributing Sergeant Bales' stress to PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
* Accounting PTSD as a justifying factor Mr. Browne held that Sergeant Bales was sad about returning to combat after being wounded twice in Iraq and he even saw a comrade's leg blown off the day before the massacre.
4. World’s first Cloned Pashmina Goat “Noori”; cloned by SKUAST, J&K
* The Scientists at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in J&K have successfully cloned the first ‘Pashmina goat’. She was named “Noori”
* The healthy female kid was born using a foster mother and it took 2 years for standardization of the technique.
* The achievement of this expertise would open up new panoramas in tactical and applied research which includes multiplication of elite animals of desired sex and stem cell technology for regenerative medicine.
* Scientists took two years to clone Noori, using the relatively new ‘handmade’ cloning technique involving only a microscope and a steady hand.
* Pashmina goats, which grow a thick warm fleece, survive on grass in Ladakh where temperatures plunge to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. Their numbers are dwindling.
*In recent years, Kashmir has started importing cashmere from neighbouring China to keep up with orders for the region’s handwoven shawls.
* This will also assist in preservation of endangered species of animals.
5. Study: White rice intake increases risk of Type II diabetes:
* As per a Study in the British Medical Journal every serving of polished rice a day increases the risk of Type II diabetes by 11%. Polished rice also called ‘White Rice’, and a serving refers to nearly 160 grams.
* As per the authors from the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, increased consumption of white rice is linked with rise in risk of Type 2
diabetes, especially in Asian (China and Japan) populations.
* A stronger +ve correlation b/w polished rice intake and rise in risk of diabetes for Asians than for Western populations.
* This research may have implications for Asians, including Indians, whose staple food is rice.
Two-fold Reasons why Polished Rice (White Rice) increases the risk of Type-II Diabetes:
1. White Rice mainly contains Starch and polishing removes many vital nutrients found in the bran viz.
Fibre, Magnesium, Vitamins Lignans (a group of Chemical Compounds acting as Anti-Oxidants).
Also, it is has been found that insoluble Fibre and Magnesium reduce the risk of Type-2 diabetes.
2. In contrast to the Brown rice, the Polished Rice contains a High Glycaemic Index (an indicator of glucose-raising effect of a food) and is a key contributor of dietary glycaemic load.
Higher dietary Glycaemic load is generally associated with the rise in risk of diabetes. Thus, the damaging effects of polishing are two-fold —
a) It removes the key nutrients that would cut the risk of diabetes.
b) It raises the Glycaemic index, thus mounting the risk of the type-2 diabetes.
